Sir Lewis Dykes Straight?

Race 5 of the SSRI GT4 series took place at Silverstone Circuit “Home of British Motor Racing”. Silverstone circuit is on the site of a Royal Air Force bomber station, RAF Silverstone, which was operational between 1943 and 1946. The airfield’s three runways, in classic WWII triangle format, lie within the outline of the present track. The evolution of the track can be found in the below trackmap.

Ok that’s your history lesson for today, how was the race? Well as always the field was close, the battles where clean and respectful and there was the odd bit of contact which can be expected in close racing. But let’s start with qualifying, as in previous blog posts we compare the pole laps from Lewis Dykes the Pro Pole position and Bas van Melis AM pole position, this to show the difference in pace between the classes. Which on a qualifying lap is 1.135 seconds, not a big difference taking into account a lap is 5.891 km (3.661 mi) and counts 18 turns.

After qualifying it was time for the race. During the GT4 season we use various race formats, for Silverstone the “in game start time” was Sunday 16:00, race length was 1 hour and there was no mandatory pitsop. With this format there is no room for errors, as a pitstop to repair damage will put you roughly 3/4 of a lap down. Time that you will most likely not make up during the 1 hour race. Therefore all drivers were eager to stay out of trouble, well almost all drivers ;-), as common simracing knowledge learns that you win the race in the first corner ;-). This weeks live coverage as always provided by the team at Simsport Solutions with Tom van de Meer behind the camera’s and the soothing voices of Adam Bent and Chris Hill providing the commentary. Be sure to watch the full coverage as there was action from start to finish througout the field!
